This is concerning because Bitcoin and Ethereum, the two largest cryptocurrencies by market cap, both use RSA and elliptic curve signatures, meaning that they are vulnerable to quantum attack. Quantum computers could rapidly outperform classical computers in solving complex mathematical problems. As cool as this ability is, it’s a pretty substantial vulnerability that we should all be aware of. The ability to do this would break the security of digital signatures and encryption protocols like those used today to secure blockchain networks.
The “store now, decrypt later” (SNDL) strategy makes the quantum threat worse. Adversaries today are vigorously harvesting encrypted data today. Their hope is to decrypt it at such time as when quantum computers are powerful enough. Quantum computers aren’t able to break ECC just yet. Future decryption is something that can happen, meaning today’s data is still at risk. In fact, some estimates even warn of a threat from quantum computing by as early as 2030. That’s why it’s so important to fix these vulnerabilities before an attack occurs.
Securing the Future with Quantum-Resistant Algorithms
In order to safeguard digital assets against quantum attacks, we need algorithms that are quantum-resistant. Keys, backups, and transactions can all be protected with algorithms that are quantum-safe, like SPHINCS+ and ML-KEM. These algorithms are the first line of defense against known quantum attacks. They provide a higher degree of security as we head into the quantum era.
Knowledge is the first and best line of defense in protecting treasures. A no-strings-attached hard fork for Bitcoin would address the concern. Such a solution would require 51% agreement from the network and a coordinated move of funds. This second approach means updating the Bitcoin protocol to include quantum-resistant algorithms, so that all future transactions moving forward are safe. Getting consensus for such a large scale change could be difficult, needing widespread support from the Bitcoin community.
Global Initiatives and International Cooperation
The quantum threat is more than just an individual crypto, it’s a matter of our national security and economic stability. Acknowledging this reality, governments and international organizations are making moves to confront the challenge.
The U.S. has placed export controls on quantum technologies, preventing the export of sensitive quantum technologies to certain countries. Specifically, the EU, Switzerland, and a handful of like-minded countries are beginning to lead on export controls on quantum technologies. Their goal is to slow the proliferation of quantum capabilities. These export controls are a very real recognition of the strategic importance of quantum technologies and the potential risks they pose.
South Korea serves as a prime example of a country taking proactive, preemptive steps to address phantom quantum threats. The EU, India, and strategic bodies like the World Economic Forum and CSIS are collaborating on quantum science and cybersecurity, fostering international cooperation and knowledge sharing. These partnerships are the beating heart of creating meaningful strategies that get results. They empower us to address the quantum threat and protect our digital infrastructure.
The Rise of Quantum-Safe Solutions
Now as the quantum threat emerges more clearly, the need for quantum-safe solutions is becoming increasingly prominent. Because these wallets, as ethereumers call them, haven’t seen use in a while. With their respective public keys in the wild, each is an easy target for quantum attack. Protecting these still-sitting dormant Bitcoins would need immediate action, including migrating them to quantum-resistant wallets, amongst other security solutions.
